MATSURI
まつり
'Matsuri' means Festival in Japanese. It is commonly said that you will always find a festival somewhere in Japan.
The biggest ones are in the summer called 'Obon'. Obon is a time when the Japanese believe their ancestors come back to visit. Big shrines from temples are run through streets accompanied by colourfully dressed dancers and music. Everyone gathers, many themselves wearing their matsuri yukata's, to enjoy the great atmosphere of these events that go on into the evening and finish with fabulous firework displays!
Any excuse for a party...you will find matsuri anytime of the year from when the cherry blossom come out to when the maple leaves turn in Autumn. The Japanese basically like any excuse to get merry under these beautiful trees!
One of the main parts of matsuri is the food. You won't commonly find sushi, tempura or domburi bowls at a matsuri. Those are foods more associated with restaurant cuisine.
Matsuri have their own style of cuisine. Comfort food at its best served from colourful stalls that really add to the atmosphere.
